Did Obama Dispatch Uncle Joe to “Mollify” Gay Community on Marriage?

Monday, May 7, 2012

This is interesting. Vice President “Uncle Joe” Joe Biden made headlines Sunday appearing on NBC’s Meet the Press where he said and I quote:

“I am absolutely comfortable with the fact that men marrying men, women marrying women, and heterosexual men and women marrying another are entitled to the same exact rights, all the civil rights, all the civil liberties. And frankly, I don’t see much of a distinction beyond that. Who do you love? And will you be loyal to the person you love?”

Biden’s inclusive proclamation stands in stark contrast to his boss, President Barack Obama who has repeatedly said he opposes same-sex marriage on religious grounds.

Uncle Joe’s remarks were welcomed by the LGBT community.

But longtime Washington journalist Howard Kurtz ain’t buying it. Kurtz wrote today in his Daily Beast column that President Obama, concerned about losing the gay vote in November, dispatched his Number Two in a calculated effort to secure the LGBT vote.

Kurtz wrote:

There is absolutely no question that Biden’s response was cleared by the White House. Vice presidents are not allowed to freelance on talk shows, especially on such a sensitive issue. So Obama was sending out Biden to further mollify the gay community without having to actually take a stand himself. It all seems a bit calculating to me.

Me too, Howie. Me too.

  1. DMason says:

Another way to look at this is, Biden is signaling the Obama administration will support marriage equality in a second term. If Obama is still “evolving” then he’s a douchebag and this will be his legacy. But he’s surrounded by people who support marriage. Some of these Including Hillary Clinton, Leon Paneta and now, Joe Biden.

All politicians lie. Liars make excellent politicians.

  3. fran says:

Uncle Joe being OK w gay marriage does not amount to any tangible action…. it’s just election year pablum.

  4. Randy Arroyo says:

Obama will OK Biden telling a crowd before the NAACP Biden’s black if Obama thought it would help get him reelected. Sorry, Joe: No Sale.

  5. Eric Equality Kuntz says:

The president — any president really, has an obligation to use the so-called bully pulpit to move an issue forward and elevate the American people.

President Obama can and must do this, vis a vis, same-sex marriage. If he fails to do this in his second term, then he will forever be known as a coward in my eyes.

  6. Joe in Colorado says:

Marriage equality poses no threat to traditional marriage. None. Obama must stop this “evolving” BS and take a position in support of the repeal of DOMA and in support of marriage equality. I know he will be criticized by the Bible thumpers but it will also make him look like a strong leader. Sending his VP out to articulate the issue means he’s hiding behind Biden’s coattails.

  7. Rendaculous says:

Obama is becoming more and more offensive to me each day.

From his bizarre need to win the approval of Republicans, to his use of drones to kill innocent people and, his waffling on gay marriage.

He is weak and lacking a spine.
