“I think that it is a good time for those who voted for the ban against gay marriage to sit and reflect and anticipate their great shame and the shame in their grandchildren’s eyes if they continue that way of support. We’ve got to have equal rights for everyone.” - Academy Award winner, Sean Penn, accepting his Oscar for Best Actor in the film, Milk

What a heartfelt sentiment. Sean Penn is a great actor and a humanitarian not afraid to take a stand on issues that matter to him. I adore him.
I agree 100%!
I hope the Mormon homophobes who watched the Oscars last night with their kids are asked by them to account.
I (heart) Sean Penn. I just do.
Apparently there were protestors outside, with anti gay signage????
The media did not show them- maybe that is good.
No air time for their hate.
I’m curious to know what the signs said?
Thou shalt not love one another?
Equal Rights for Some!
At a different awards show, Ellen DeGeneres made the remark, “I’d also like to thank my…. (long pause) “roommate”.
Marriages had just been revoked due to prop 8, and that was her commentary on it.
It was her spouse she was referring to.
KABC said the bigots carrying signs were from our old friends at the Westboro Baptist Church.
I don’t know if Fred Phelps was there. He’s old now and his daughter is taking over a large role in their hate campaign against gays, the surviving spouses and family members of soldiers killed in the line of duty, and crime victims.
By the way. I saw the UK Parliament banned them from entering Britain after Phelps called the Queen of England a “whore.”
He said what most of us think is just common sense. But he said with honesty and conviction.
I wonder how teenagers who came up in a world where gay people are just a normal part of the scenery will view their parents when they realize they voted for Prop 8?
Kids are smart and surprisingly sophisticated. They have to think their parents are total morons for engaging in discrimination.
Both Penn’s and Black’s acceptance speeches were the highpoints of last night’s show for me.
Penn’s performance in ‘Milk’ was something else.
He’s a consummate actor and his political views just make him all the more exciting. One of the things I appreciate about Sean Penn is he’s fearless.
I love that he made mention of the issues, acknowledged his personality, and gave a very heartfelt speech, unlike the days of yore when actors would just pontificate. It was genuine, and that’s what made it so passionate and great.
Beautiful speeches both of them. If only I could have seen speeches like this as a kid when I watched the oscars…
I love it. This has riled the right up like none other. Penn showed not just character when he spoke, but courage. Well done.
