Just Five Red States Remaining?

Thursday, January 29, 2009

The GOP should afraid, very afraid.

According to our friends at FiveThirtyEight, the Gallup is in the midst of releasing a series of data from the more than 350,000 interviews that it conducted over the course of its daily tracking in 2008. The first data they’ve released, on partisan affiliation, contains some sobering news for Republicans:

fiveredstates

Just five states, collectively containing about 2 percent of the American population, have statistically significant pluralities of adults identifying themselves as Republicans. These are the “Mormon Belt” states of Utah, Idaho and Wyoming, plus Nebraska and Alaska.

By contrast, 35 states are plurality Democratic, and 10 states are too close to call.

If Gallup’s numbers are correct, this does not bode well for any Republican challenger to President Barack Obama in 2012, including Sarah Palin or Newt Gingrich.

So Gallup isn’t placing Texas in the Red State category? Interesting. I know the four largest cities in Texas, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio and Austin each voted in a majority for Obama. I was shocked to read this in the New York Times. However, they voted to reelect John Cornyn. This isn’t exactly what you would call good judgment.

I think this is the one thing we can thank George Bush for accomplishing: turning the majority of the nation against the Republican party and everything they stand for.

So, Alaska is really that Red? Who knew?

    Christopher! ^5^! Great news!

  4. Bel Ami says:

Five red states is five too many in my opinion. I won’t be happy until there are none, zed, zero. The red states have done nothing but cause havoc for me and for this country. I have no use for the red states.

  5. Estacada says:

Remind me to avoid the Mormon Belt.

    Sounds scary.

  6. joe says:

    Sarah Palin…. hahahaha

  7. Peace Nick says:

If Obama does well and every indication is, he’s doing just fine, that number could shrink to just two red state.

I don’t think Utah and Wyoming will ever go blue.

  8. JIm says:

Good news in these troubled times indeed!!!!

  9. kansas? i know they have sebelius – but that state (and many of the other competitive states) will vote democratic for local/state – but not for federal office – typical schizoid personalities of the GOP

  10. libhomo says:

This certainly illustrates how dangerous Mormonism can be.

  11. BradFrmPhnx says:

    Good for the Blue.

  12. Mauigirl says:

This is great as long as it doesn’t make the left complacent! There are a lot of independents who vote either way depending on what’s going on.

  13. RealWorldRadical says:

This is a 2 party system, and our constitution as it is pretty much guarantees it will stay that way. Swings one way or the other will be temporary…what will change is the way parties define themselves. That is constantly rewritten.

There aren’t absolute values that the Republicans or Democrats have and will stand for. They have changed with the times and will continue to do so. But over any 10 year period, the votes will still average out 50/50…and can swing fast at any time.
