ChicagoTribune: “Indiana, Go to Obama”

Monday, May 5, 2008

Not since Robert F. Kennedy’s short-lived presidential campaign has the first Tuesday in May mattered so much. That’s cause for excitement in Indiana, a state that is typically an afterthought in presidential primary politics. With the race between Democrats Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton threatening to last until August’s national convention, and the candidates running neck-and-neck in Indiana, Hoosiers have a big role to play in picking the 2008 Democratic nominee.

At times, the historic contest between the first viable female presidential candidate and the first viable African-American has threatened to devolve into just another ugly race between ordinary pols whose positions on the issues are largely the same. But in recent weeks, Obama’s personal and political mettle have been sorely tested— and have been proven.

By contrast, look what we’ve seen from Hillary Clinton’s campaign in recent weeks. Her embellishments about the purported danger of a 1996 trip to Bosnia. Bill Clinton’s statement that the Obama campaign “played the race card on me,” and Clinton’s later, laughable denial that he had used those words. We’ve seen a campaign that has sought to tear down its opponent and pander to voters. The Clinton campaign is playing just the kind of politics that Americans say they detest.

We need a president who can forge consensus and compromise among ideological foes. Barack Obama is that kind of Democrat; Hillary Clinton is not.

Indiana Democrats, your choice should be clear: Barack Obama.

All we can do is keep our fingers crossed. If Billary wins anything else, there will be no way to get rid of him/her before the convention, and no end of mischief from them on behalf of, ultimately, the Republicans. Help us, Hoosiers & Tarheels! Obama needs those extra points!

    Meanwhile, in worse news:

“Myanmar believes cyclone killed at least 10,000: diplomat”

But don’t worry. The Dubya loves his little brown ones.
“DUBYA: ‘PROBLEM IS, THEY’RE NOT STARVIN’ IN INDIA’ “

  • There are certainly no after-thought primaries in this race.

Interesting piece- thanks for posting it, I might not have seen this.

I posted a reply earlier but is disappeared. I just wanted to say what a splendid piece by the Chicago Tribune and one that I agree completely. Obama is clearly the superior candidate and I hope he becomes our next president.

    Great endorsement! Go, Obama Go!

  • Sorry for any confusion on this post, folks.

WordPress acted up this morning and I had to repost the thread. Everyone’s comments were deleted.

    Again, I’m sorry this happened.

  • Let’s keep our fingers crossed. Hopefully we can get rid of the “two headed daemon” soon

Obama’s dominance in North Carolina will obliterate any delegates Clinton may win in Indiana.

This race is still Obama’s to lose. He is ahead in the popular vote and ahead in the delegate count. Why the media can’t bring themselves to say it is simply bizarre to me.

I have to think the Obama campaign is sitting on his own nuclear option of negative baggage that will sink her. We’ll see tomorrow night.

  • I was fortunate to have Sen. Obama spend a little over five minutes with me and my family yesterday. He asked how he could be of help to our family. Posed for photos, held my five year old son and asked him a few question - Harrison told him he would be six on Wednesday and Obama wished him a happy birthday. He even took the time to compliment my daughter on her red and blue toenails. He’s the genuine thing. An honest to goodness human being.

I tried to post this morning but I kept getting an error message. I thought you were down for maintenance. Glad to see it was WordPress and nothing more serious. Agree with endorsement. Obama’s the one we need!

  • To hear the media spin it it’s a win win win for Hillary no matter what happens.

If Hillary loses North Carolina by a few points its a win for her.

If she wins Indiana by a few points its a win for her.

The sad reality is the media keeps stringing this thing along as if there is something left to win.

Obama has won the pledged delegates. Hillary cannot overtake him.

All Hillary can do is try to somehow convine the Super Delegates to go to her.

And despite what she and the media say, this is highly unlikely. Obama is out-fundraising her and bringing new people into the Democratic Party.

Most rational people understand that the arguement based on current national polls that somehow now Obama is unelectable is bogus.

It’s as if all of Obama’s previous victories don’t count and only Hillary’s recent victories matter. It doesn’t work that way.

Shame on the media for passing on the Hillary meme that somehow it’s still possible for Hillary ‘to win’.

If I have to hear them again parrot this bullshit about her being a’fighter’ I’m going to puke. She is a liar. She is a panderer. That’s not being a fighter, that’s being an opportunist.

  • Good for the newspaper. Too bad the mainstream media is fluffing Hillary like she’s a porn star.

Would it were over tomorrow evening and Obama can be declared the Democratic candidate.

The continuing kerfuffle surrounding Hillary Clinton’s effort to be the next president, I am reminded of the old style Chicago Democratic machine surrounding the Daly family.

They too would stop at nothing to seize power and hold onto control of city hall.

I think this crazy broad will take her argument to the floor of the convention and the American people — ready to embrace a Democrat for president just a few months ago, will swing to John McCain who is beginning to look like the sane candidate.

  • I wouldn’t be surprised, Aunt Peg. I just hope nobody goes over the side to “which lane McCain”.

Chris, you’ve gotta see this if you haven’t already…

Peace… Blessings to those souls lost in Myanmar

  • I sure hope Clinton loses in Indiana and North Carolina. I’m so sick of that nutjob, especially since she keeps threatening to nuke Iran.

  • I am so glad that you are up and running- gave me a scare this morning….was worried about you…..this charade of the Hillathon that the media keeps humping needs to end…and the Sooner the better….but they seem determined to drag it out….The letters written in to Jack Cafferty this week were amazing- really letting the Media ( yes Wolf) have it……Polshifter really summed it above…..and about the Chicago Tribune- they nailed it…..The sooner the Billary gets whomped with Reality the better….
