Saturday Review

Earth is the hottest it's been in 2,000 years. So reports the National Academy of Sciences after reconstructing global average surface temperatures for the past two millennia and the evidence points to human activities as the cause. Now, I know the flat world crowd, who believe all life began 6,000 years ago and, includes most of the Bush administration, including the president himself, still refuse to accept global warming as fact, but GOPers please; what if science is correct? Is this the world you want to leave to your grandchildren?

The Pentagon banned the media from the Guantanamo Bay prison facility after the suicide deaths of three detainees. The lone exception was FOXNews (GOP-TV). Fox News analyst Judge Andrew Napolitano even chortled about how the Defense Department had personally invited him on a trip to visit Guantanamo. Let me say this again: it's time for Donald Rumsfeld to resign or be fired. Enough already.

Bruce Springsteen appeared on CNN and was if getting flak about his political views, such as backing John Kerry in 2004, made him wonder if musicians should try so hard to be taken seriously on topical issues. "They should let Ann Coulter do it instead?" he mused, with a chuckle. Then he said, "You can turn on the idiots rambling on, on cable television, every night of the week and they say musicians shouldn’t speak up? It’s insane, it’s funny."

Democrats in the Senate failed this week to establish a timetable for US troop withdrawal from Iraq. Republicans – warmongers all, were successful in portraying the Democrats in two negative ways. First, as divided (read: pro-Iraq war Hillary, Lieberman and Biden) on how to proceed in the war, and second, as quitters wanting to "cut and run," (a focus group tested term coined by Karl Rove). It looks like the left has once again been outsmarted by Bush's brain. If Democrats are unable to get on the same page about an issue as critical as the Iraq war, we might as well say goodbye to any hopes of regaining the Congress in November.

I never thought it before, but what makes Springsteen any less qualifed to comment on politics than that shrew Coulter? Just because she’s a winger doesn’t make her remarks anymore valid than his.

  2. Why It Smith says:

If the Dem hawks don’t get on board the antiwar movement, they should be run out of town before they can do more harm.

  3. Panda says:

Global warming is irrefutable. Only a small sliver of wingnuttia rejects what amounts to a least 25 years of scientic evidence on the subject. Maybe the religious right believes if they pray enough, Jesus will step in and fix the earth. I wish things worked that way, but it ain’t gonna’ happen.

  4. AngryDEM says:

    Bruce Springsteen is so right.

What makes him unqualified to speak about politics, but Mann Coulter is qualified?

    Bullshit.

  5. Harry says:

Bush has handed Democrats a litany of tools to go after the GOP with. From the Iraq war, to the debt and global warming. If we can close the deal in the midterms, as well as in 2008, then there’s something terribly wrong and we deserve to lose.
