Earlier this week, Molly Ivins wrote a column that asked, "Is Bush a Lunatic?" After reading and hearing NBC White House correspondent David Gregory's interview with President Bush in Yuma, AZ yesterday, I think she nailed it.
From ThinkProgress:
NBC White House correspondent David Gregory interviewed President Bush this morning on the Today Show and asked him why so many people disapprove of the job he’s doing. Bush brushed aside the public’s concern about his policies and insisted that nearly 70 percent of Americans are simply “unsettled.” Watch it.
Transcript:
GREGORY: Let me ask you about your leadership. In the most recent survey, your disapproval rating is now one point lower than Richard Nixon’s before he resigned the presidency. You are laughing.
BUSH: I’m not laughing –
GREGORY: Why? Why do you think that is?
BUSH: Because we are at war, and war unsettles people. Listen, we got a great economy. We’ve added 5.2 million jobs in the last two and a half years. People are unsettled.
GREGORY: But they’re not just unsettled sir. They disapprove of the job you’re doing.
BUSH: That’s unsettled.
No Mr. President, you need help — quickly.

OMG. He really is nutso.
Let’s hope the military is keeping an eye on him before he gets worse and harms the American people.

I always liked David Gregory. He’s fearless and reminds me of the type of journalist who doesn’t cave before power. That he challenged Cuckoo Bush on his bizarre laughing when asked a tough or challenging question, for proves Gregory is the real deal.
Frankly, Bush has always given me the creeps. It’s all about the eyes and that soul-less laughter. I just think he’s capable of great cruelty and he will carry it out without a shred of thought.
There were stories about him torturing small animals as a young boy. That is not normal behavior and suggests he is a very angry person.
Let’s hope our country makes it to 2008 so we can show him the door.

Longtime reader, first time commentor. Here goes.
I watched the video clip. It was as though Bush didn’t know his approval numbers
were in Nixon’s territory. Is this possible?

Hi Deana,
Thanks for posting.
I think you made a great observation: maybe Bushco really is kept away from all his horrific public approval numbers by his handlers.
They say he doesn’t read a newspaper, so it’s possible David Gregory’s questions caught him unprepared and unscripted.
I think it’s telling that Bush’s response suggests the problem lies — not with him (of course), but with us, the American people.
Molly Ivins was correct: Bush is crazy.

It’s all in his eyes. He looks unhinged. Like a mumbling panhandler you’d encounter downtown in any US city.

We are NOT at war. Why do people get away with saying that so often? We are occupying a foreign country. And we are trying to prevent acts of terrorism. But that is not “being at war.”

This is just getting disturbing… Laura Bush is out there saying she doesn’t believe the polls and now Bush says it’s just a matter of being unsettled, implying that when they settle things, they will be on his side again. What if they are laying the groundwork for how they plan to explain how overwhelming majorities of voters, all using Diebold Machines of course, elected to name him President for life, despite his negative approval ratings?!?!
Ok, maybe that’s not all that feasible (thank God!), but this does put me on my guard. Whenever they start coming out with these coordinated messages like this, something stinks…

What makes you think this guy doesn’t read the newspapers? The claim that he wasn’t interested in the media was a page lifted straight out of the Reagan handbook, designed to help craft an image of a regular Joe.

Bush needs a nice, long rest in a quiet setting, with no sharp objects or fireams closeby.

Capital Hill Blues reported on Bush’s mental illness a few years ago.
They said he took antidepressants and stormed around the White House cursing at anyone who dared to challenge him.
He’s not well.

Speaking, I remember hearing about the article you posted. Team Bush pooh-pooh’d the article claiming it was all fiction and an eefort by liberals to attack the president.

Indeed. Bush is as crazy as a Loon. I’d bet you $100 he wanders around the WH babbling to himself and telling Laura he hears voices.

Bush is whacked all RIGHT! I mean he makes my dysfunction look normal! kb
